Army Sgt. Anselmo Martinez III
Sgt. Anselmo "BJ" Martinez, III, 26, of Fort Hood, Texas and formerly of Robstown, Texas, died May 18, 2007 in Tahrir, Iraq from wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using an improvised explosive device. Sgt. Martinez was a Gunner on an M1A3 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle in the United States Army. BJ joined the military in November 2001, after 9/11, as an infantryman. He attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA from November 2001-April 2002. His first duty station was Fort Benning, He re-enlisted in November 2004 and PCSed to Fort Hood, Texas where he was assigned in June 2005 to 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.. While assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, BJ attended PLDC from March-April 2006. He also deployed to JRTC in Ft. Polk, LA in May 2006. Sgt. Martinez was deployed with 1/12 Cav, 3 HBCT in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom IV. Martinez’s military awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Posthumous awards include Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He is survived by his wife Christina M. Martinez, and two daughters Felicity E. and Eliana R. Martinez.
