Officer Richard May was shot and killed when he responded to a disturbance call.
Officer May responded to the corner of University Avenue and Weeks Street at approximately 1630 hours. When he arrived, he observed several men fighting. As he approached the group, one of the men fled. Officer May attempted to stop that male, when the suspect turned around and opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun, killing Officer May. The suspect fled on foot, but was apprehended later that night. The suspect, a documented gang member, was shot in the leg by the victim officer.
A 14-year-old police explorer was participating in a ride along with Officer May at the time of the incident, but was not injured.
Officer May was a US Marine Corps veteran and had served with the East Palo Alto Police Department for 18 months. He had previously served for 10 years with the Lompoc Police Department. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

East Palo Alto police officer Rich May and his partner were standing with a tow truck driver when a gangbanger fired shots at them, injuring the driver.
May called home to San Luis Obispo, and he and his father talked about it, as they always did. May wasn't afraid. If anything, his proper, polite son who had spent much of his career trying to help troubled kids was even more inspired, his father said.
"He told me, 'We'll get that guy. You can't shoot at a police officer,'" Richard May Sr. told Knight Ridder.
This weekend, a gang member -- another one -- allegedly shot and killed May.
Hours later, when Chief Ron Davis told May Sr. that his son had been killed in the line of duty, the father said, "The first thing is that he loved being a police officer in East Palo Alto. He loved what he was doing."
May -- who was born, raised and still lived with his wife and three daughters near San Luis Obispo -- had no illusions about the type of person who killed him. He wanted to patrol mean streets.
The 38-year-old former Marine dreamed that one day he could be a police chief. So he came to the East Palo Alto Police Department 18 months ago to learn firsthand about the gangbangers, the drug dealers -- and their victims.
"He knew he had to go to a tough department to prove himself," his father said.
It was not the kind of world in which he grew up.
As a youth, May was a conscientious boy interested in sports, his father said. He gradated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1985 and went into the Marines.
Respectful, straightforward and yearning to serve something bigger than himself, May fit the Marines and the Marines fit May. He served in an intelligence unit, his father said, and when he was activated out of reserves, he served in Operation Desert Storm
