All gave some, Some gave ALL.
In Honor of:
5 Killed in Afghanistan 10th Mountain Division
Rogelio Garza, Andrew Small, Douglas Sloan, Alex Oceguera, James White,

The Following was sent to the Tye Band Company during the creation of this first even 5 portrait Tye Band.
CPT Sloan was my Company Commander who was killed on his last mission as our CO while I was home on leave. I actually spent about ten days with his widow and children since I was near their home. I then went to Arlington to represent the unit as his funeral.
PFC Oceguera was killed the same day as CPT Sloan by the same IED. He was a very young good kid who every one liked. The next three were all killed together in the mountains where old Ben likes to hang out. PFC White was the first Soldier I lost here that was under my command. He was killed instantly by an enemy RPG. When I talked to his parents over the phone it was very hard on his father. Again he was another good young kid who died for his friends.
CPL Garza I knew him and his family for 3 years. He was a natural leader who took pride in what he did.
Finally PFC Small, this is my kid that became a hero that day. He was in the lead team that was ambushed by 10 bad guys on a trail that ran along a cliff at 8,000 feet. During the first 4 RPGs five men were hit. Garza and White died instantly. Small who was mortally wounded exposed him self and returned fire so his other two friends could drag themselves of the cliff to safety. He continued to fire reloading his light machine gun four times to the rest of the element could move. He was hit numerous times and never tried to find cover or quit fighting. When we found him he was still on the trail with no ammo left oriented towards the enemy positions. There was no doubt the reason the other two wounded men lived is because Small took all the enemy’s fire and attention on himself. We have submitted him for the Silver Star and with any luck when I come home in June or July after 16 months here I will be able to give that to his mother.
I just wanted to give you the story behind the faces I sent. This is my 3rd year I’ve been deployed since Sep 11th 2001. I as on the
invasion here and in Iraq. A lot of people ask why I still do it or do I think it is a just cause. All I know is that the men fighting here
are defiantly taking the fight to the bad guys so they don't have time to come to our homes.
